Engagement Session | Tampa | Lutz | Carrollwood
The great thing about engagement sessions is that you can really do whatever you want with them. Want to dress nice and shoot in the park? Great. Want to go to the beach and get in the water? Sure. Want to shoot at the cross-fit gym? Fantastic!
I love a good challenge. I’m a big believer in the idea that a good photographer can do good work in any location under any condition. This is why we have lights. This is why we have expensive equipment. This is why we are constantly learning new tricks and techniques.
So, when Derek and Beth said they were big into Crossfit and asked if we could incorporate that into their engagement session, I was all for it. We started in the dark, windowless cross-fit gym which required three different flashes and ended up at the park where I was able to work with natural light quite a bit. I don’t think I’ve ever had an engagement session that had so much variety of style and lighting.
If you look on Pinterest, you’ll probably find some cross-fit images that are very similar. Beth brought me some examples of what she likes and I tried to copy them for her. It’s always a little weird when you basically reproduce someone else’s shot but really, all photography is copied in one way or another. All art is, really. For example, we have a lighting pattern in photography that’s called “Rembrandt Light” because it copies the lighting pattern that Rembrandt used in his paintings. I’m happy to give people what they want. Of course, I do my own stuff too. (In fact, most of these shots are my poses)
We had a great day. Here are a few of my favorites!
St. Pete Beach Wedding | Bring A Coat
Yesterday, I shot Ty and Kristen’s wedding on St. Pete Beach. I wore long pants because I thought there was a chance it would get chilly. You have to understand that when you work on the beach in Florida, you work in shorts most of the time, especially in summer. As it turned out, not only was I right to wear long pants, I should have brought a jacket. The temperature was dropping fast an hour before sunset. Guests had brought towels to keep warm (lol).
Kristen was a great sport through it all even when it was clear that she was very cold. One of the advantages of having done about 500 beach weddings is that I can move pretty fast when I need to so I was able to get everything I wanted and get them off that cold beach quickly. :) Here’s a couple of shots from the session:
S.C. Photo Convention
I just got back from South Carolina recently after speaking at the South Carolina Photo Convention. David Junker saw me speak at Imaging USA in Nashville in 2015 and contacted me about coming to South Carolina for their state convention. After he mentioned that he listens to my podcast, I said, “Why don’t you bring Gary up too? He can teach a class as well and we can also do a live podcast!” David was all for it so we brought all the gear and did a live Photobomb Podcast.
We had a great weekend in Charleston. I didn’t get to see as much of the city as I would have liked. I’m a Civil War guy so being in the town where it all started was very cool. I’m going to try and plan a family trip there at a later date.
By the way, there’s no need to ask for sweet tea at Wendy’s in Charelston. They only serve sweet tea. Gotta love the south.
My program was about weddings and the things that a new photographer needs to do to become good. Everyone was great at my class and it went well. I’ve taught this program probably 15 times but you still get a little nervous every time.
I’ll be in Massachusetts in the fall to teach some more!
Thank you Kelly Lucas Photography for the picture!
