Yesterday I had a different sort of wedding job.
I know a lot of photographers. I mean a lot. I teach all over the state and speak at the national convention and host the webcast during the International Print Competition. I meet photographers from all over the country
I’m kind of a big deal.
Not really, but I’ve always wanted to say that.
Anyway, I know a lot of photographers so I sometimes find myself shooting a photographer’s wedding or a photographer’s child’s wedding. I’m always a little nervous because photographers are opinionated artists and you don’t want to disappoint. They are also understanding and kind and wonderful to work for… any nervousness is always self-inflicted because they know full-well how you feel and they are all wonderful to me.
So yesterday I was part of a team working for my friend Lissa Hatcher. Lissa’s daughter Jasmine was getting married and she basically had a tag team of photographers (including herself) working the wedding. My job was to shoot the ceremony and a few pictures of the couple after. So it was quick. She had someone else doing groups before the ceremony and someone else at the party.
Let me tell you, having a bride who grew up with a mom who is a photographer is awesome. She totally gets what we do and knows how to make herself look good for the camera without much coaching. It was a real treat. I only got to spend 15 minutes with Jasmine and Daniel but they were great minutes!

IPC Live with your host Booray Perry
The IPC is the International Photographic Competition. One of the largest competitions in the world and it’s run by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) which is the largest and oldest professional organization for photographers in America (28,000 members).
I’ve been a member of the PPA since I started as a professional photographer. It is a fantastic organization, run by the members. This year I was elected as a councilor for Florida… sort of like being a member of the House of Representatives except less sleazy. If I wanted to, I could run for the Board of Directors, chair a committee, etc. The PPA has a fantastic monthly magazine and website, a huge yearly convention (which I spoke at last year and will be teaching a class at this year) and provides benefits like insurance and education to it’s members. The primary focus is education… helping photographers become better at what they do while upholding ethical standards.
The IPC is the biggest event of the year (along with the convention). Thousands of images are entered. They have 4 rooms of judging and it still takes four days.
Last year for the first time, they streamed the judging live on the internet. You could click from room to room and watch the images as they came up. Occasionally, there will be disagreement among the judges and someone will “challenge.” That’s when things get interesting as the judges discuss the print and try to sway the scores.
After the success of last year’s streaming, they decided to add something new this year. Twice each day they will have a live webcast during the competition. It will feature interviews with judges, live critique of images, questions from the viewers via twitter, etc. People who watch the judging can tune in and learn more about how the whole process works and get tips on making their images better.

I flew to Atlanta last week for a production meeting. They had taped off the floor in a room at the home office that was the same dimensions as where we will broadcast. I spent the day doing promo’s and working with everyone to flesh out what the programs would be like. When Rich (IPC Director) asked me to come to Atlanta for the day, he said he “wanted my input.” People say that sort of thing all the time but I was amazed at how much I was consulted and included in the planning. I figured I would just be “the talent” but every person I met, every one, was eager to work together, bounce around ideas and genuinely excited about what we were doing. From the minute I walked in I was being approached by people asking me what I thought about all kinds of topics related to the PPA, not just the broadcast. It was fantastic. I was a big fan of PPA before but now I’ll defend it to the death. What a great bunch of people.

Treasure Island Beach Wedding
Oh my, I have been busy!
I’m about half-way through what may be my busiest summer yet with weddings galore, Senior pics, Family pics, Headshots… you name it, I’ve done it in the last 2 months.
Of course, this leaves little time for blogging but I did want to get a few pictures online from a wedding last week because there were a couple of interesting shots.
First, the bride’s bouquet was really different:
Second, the couple had a daughter who really didn’t want daddy to have to stand up there all by himself:
Finally, the bride wore a unique dress. I see all kinds of dresses on the beach (still waiting for the day that someone gets married in a bikini) but never one like this:
The beach is one of those places where you really have a lot of choices. You can go full gown and it’s okay… you can do “hybrid” and it’s okay too! There’s no rules! I thought this was great!
