A Perfect Florida Beach Wedding
I photograph a lot of beach weddings. My company provides wedding photography for Perfect Florida Beach Wedding so I’m at the beach every week (or one of my team is at the beach, or I’m at one beach and they are at another beach…. you get the picture. It’s a lot of beach weddings.) It’s a great job because I get to do so many weddings. Few wedding photographers have the chance to photograph as many brides as I do in such a short amount of time (the other great gig for shooting a lot of brides? Disney weddings.)
If there’s one thing that I’ve learned over the years it’s that attitude is so very important when it comes to beach weddings. With any wedding there’s always a chance something can go wrong and beach weddings are no exception. It can get pretty windy at the beach (we always recommend an “up-do” with lots of hairspray), it can be overcast, it can rain, it can be hot… or cold… there’s a lot of variables. But the one thing that is completely under your control is your attitude.
For example, I recently photographed Mark and Beth’s wedding at Sunset Beach. It was just the two of them, no guests. Mark, Beth, the officiant and me.
It was a crappy day.
Or at least, it appeared to be a crappy day to the untrained eye. It was overcast and cloudy. It actually started to rain toward the end.. but that’s okay because photography is funny. What many people consider to be awful can actually work in a photographer’s favor. Overcast skies mean broad, soft light. It also means no one else is on the beach (or in your pictures). But none of this is as big a factor as the attitude of the bride and groom.
Mark and Beth had a great attitude. They didn’t seem to care one bit that it wasn’t as perfect that day at the beach as they might have imagined. They were just happy and in love and ready to be married. I can work with that. I can work with that all day. I’ll take a great attitude in awful surroundings over a bad attitude in a beautiful setting every time.
We had a great time and we got great images. If you give your photographer the attitude he needs he will give you something memorable every time. Remember that the most important part of any picture is you. If you want your pictures to be passionate, you have to bring passion.
Don’t get caught up in the weather on the day of your beach wedding. get caught up in each other. We’ll take care of the rest. :)

Tampa Wedding Photographer of the Year
Last Sunday was the annual holiday party and awards banquet for T.A.P.P.A. (Tampa Area Professional Photographers Association). We meet every month at The Doubletree Hotel to hold images competition, network and watch a presentation from a fellow photographer. You never know what you will get, sometimes it’s a portrait photographer, other times it events or weddings… we once had an entire program on photographing pets which was great! No matter what kind of photography you enjoy, there’s always something to take away from the meetings and of course you become friends with lots of awesome people (like me!).
This year I was awarded “Event Photographer of the Year” for the second year. The award is given to the person who wins the most ribbons in a specific category in competition each month. (There’s also a “Portrait Photographer of the Year,” “Commercial Photographer of the Year” etc..)
I came in third for “Photographer of the Year.” The winner, Randy van Duinen is a good friend and a fantastic architectural photographer. His images were amazing this year. He won “Commercial” and “Unclassified’ so he was a shoe-in.
I was also elected to the Board of Directors this year. My plan is to get in an argument with someone at my very first meeting of the board, then yell, “I SAID GOOD-DAY SIR!!” :)
It’s a great organization. There are chapters all over the country and we are the local arm of the PPA Professional Photographers Association. We have chapters all over Florida and this year i was invited to speak in Ocala, Sarasota, Lakeland, Miami, West Palm and Jacksonville. (I have a program about wedding photography.) Tampa is the largest chapter in the state and the 8th largest chapter in the country. A statistic that we like to rub people’s faces in as often as possible. :)
The coolest thing that happened this year was competing in the International Print Competition. There are several levels of print competition (local, state, regional and national). The International Print Competition is the national event. This year there were 1268 registrants and over 5000 images in the competition. Each photographer can enter 4 images. The goal is to receive a “merit” for your image. I recieved 4 merits this year which was only achieved by 224 photographers out of the 1268 who entered. If you think I love myself now, you should have seen me the day I got that news!
To top it all off, my friend Gary Hughes in Orlando just told me that he saw a rough draft of a video that PPA is putting together to encourage people to enter competition. He said two of my images are in the video. :)
So, that’s my year-end round up where I write about how awesome I am. Believe it or not, I actually hate writing this stuff but in business you have to “toot you own horn” because no one else will do it for you. Should I also mention that I’m incredibly sexy and funny, too?
Nah… I’ll save that for next year. :)
Tampa Bat Mitzvah Photography
Okay, so I know how this will look because people are always raving about how wonderful their clients are… “Oh! My clients are the best!’ etc, etc…
But I’ve had two incredible Bat Mitzvah photo sessions in the last weeks. Both girls showed up ready to give it their all and it was just a joy working with them.
Alissa’s Bat Mitzvah Guest Book just arrived today. She’s going to love it!
We ended up with so many great images that her Mom added pages to the book to fit them all in. :)
The other great session was Isabelle, who I just photographed yesterday. I haven’t even started the post-processing work yet but the images are going to be great. We went to the University of Tampa (or, as I like to call it: The Tampa Photographer’s Convention… because there are always so many photographers there). I do want to show one quick image, however:
Again, I know that people are always blogging about how great their clients are because, let’s face it, it never hurts to be nice to your clients! :) But this is the real deal. These girls were just fantastic!
